Dollar General Settles Overcharging Allegations

Dollar General, the largest dollar-store chain in the U.S., has agreed to a $1.875 million settlement to resolve allegations of overcharging customers in New York. This settlement follows a 2025 investigation by the New York attorney general's office, which revealed that the company frequently charged higher prices at checkout than those advertised on shelf labels, signs, and its mobile app.

Findings of the Investigation

Government inspections uncovered significant discrepancies in pricing:

  • Overcharges on individual items reached as high as 39%.
  • A check of 114 items across multiple stores indicated overcharges of 26%, 38%, and 39%.

Settlement Details

As part of the settlement, Dollar General will:

  • Donate $1.875 million in food and personal items to a regional food bank in upstate New York.
  • Implement comprehensive price-accuracy safeguards across its 600+ stores in the state.
