Six Flags is set to reopen its Goliath rollercoaster in Georgia, implementing new safety measures including seatbelts, after a tragic incident earlier this month that resulted in the death of a rider.
Incident Overview
Hassan Jihad Ibn Kariem, a 42-year-old father and educator, fell from the ride, which features a steep drop of 165 feet followed by a second drop of 180 feet. During the fall, he collided with other cars on the ride. The incident has prompted Georgia authorities to launch an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Kariem's death.
Immediate Response
In response to the incident, Six Flags temporarily closed the Goliath along with eight other rides across five parks. John Reilly, the CEO of Six Flags, expressed the park's commitment to safety, stating:
“"What happened has deeply affected all of us at Six Flags. Safety has always been fundamental to the experience we provide for our guests."
