Pope Leo XIV is recovering well after surgery to remove a lower lobe of his lung, according to his doctors. The 71-year-old pontiff has begun walking and has resumed a normal diet following the approximately 90-minute procedure at Rome's Gemelli Hospital on Tuesday afternoon.

The Vatican reported that the surgery was successful and proceeded without complications. Following the operation, blood tests and an X-ray conducted on Wednesday indicated that the Pope's recovery was progressing normally. He has also undergone respiratory physiotherapy.

The entire lower lobe of the Pope's right lung was removed to ensure a radical procedure. The Vatican stated, "After the operation, the Pope awoke normally and returned after a brief period of observation to his room," and he spent a "peaceful night" at the hospital. The pontiff is expected to remain hospitalized for about a week as he continues to recover.
