Pope Leo is recovering well after undergoing surgery to remove a cancerous growth from his lung. His doctors reported that the pontiff has begun walking in his hospital room and is eating normally following the operation, which took place late on Tuesday.

Recovery Progress

According to doctors Luigi Carbone and Stefano Margaritoria, who issued a statement from the Vatican, a blood test and chest x-ray showed "normal post-operative progress" with values within the expected range for the type of procedure performed. The surgery at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital confirmed that Leo, aged 71, has adenocarcinoma, the most common type of lung cancer.

Global Support

Messages of support have poured in from around the world. Notably, King Charles of Britain sent a letter wishing Leo well. The king, who is also undergoing treatment for an undisclosed form of cancer, had previously met the pope during a visit to the Vatican in October last year.
