A Singapore-flagged container ship, the GFS Pride, has sunk after being struck by an unknown projectile while transiting the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday. According to the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore, all 21 crew members were evacuated safely, and no injuries were reported following the attack, which caused significant damage and a fire.
Incident Details
Another Singapore-flagged vessel, the GFS Giselle, also sustained hull damage from a projectile on Wednesday but managed to reach a safe anchorage with all 22 crew members unharmed.
Iran's Revolutionary Guards claimed that a ship hit naval mines and sank while navigating what they termed an "unauthorized" route in the Strait of Hormuz. They released images showing a plume of black smoke rising from a container vessel that was still afloat but down by the stern, with dozens of containers visible in the water.
The Hydrographer of Pakistan has warned mariners that the GFS Pride sank approximately 4 nautical miles (7.4 km) northwest of Ras al-Sheikh Masud in Oman's Musandam Peninsula.
Additional Attacks
Meanwhile, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) agency reported that two unnamed container ships were struck by unknown projectiles while transiting the Strait of Hormuz between 16:40 and 17:00 GMT on Tuesday. Both vessels sustained minor damage and were able to continue their journeys.
