Netflix has announced it will cut 1,000 jobs globally as the streaming giant faces increasing competition from rivals. This decision marks the steepest reduction in its workforce since 2022, affecting approximately 6% of its total employees, primarily in the human resources, legal, product, and technology teams.
Context
Last month, Ted Sarandos, co-chief executive of Netflix, expressed concerns about the company's growth during the Bloomberg Screentime summit, stating that the company was "not growing as fast as I want us to." The streaming industry is currently experiencing a period of consolidation, highlighted by Paramount's $110 billion merger with Warner Bros, the owner of HBO. Meanwhile, free platforms like YouTube and TikTok continue to attract a significant number of viewers.
Developments
In an email to staff, Sarandos and co-chief executive Greg Peters emphasized that Netflix would "continue to invest aggressively in high-impact areas to improve our service and further drive growth and innovation." They noted that Netflix had nearly secured a deal with Warner Bros but was ultimately outbid by Paramount.
