Bruce Baird, a former federal Liberal MP and deputy leader of the party’s New South Wales branch, has died at the age of 84. Baird, who served as the NSW transport minister from 1988 to 1995, was the father of former state premier Mike Baird, ABC journalist Julia Baird, and marketing executive Steve Baird. He played a crucial role in lobbying for the 2000 Olympic Games to be hosted in Sydney.

Political Career

Baird entered federal parliament as the member for Cook and retired before the 2007 election, which saw Scott Morrison win the seat and later become prime minister. Morrison expressed his condolences, stating that Baird was "a giant, a mentor and a friend who celebrated and lived out his strong Christian faith, loved his family and served his country, his state and our community in the shire."

He highlighted Baird's significant achievements, particularly his impact on Sydney through the successful Olympic bid.

Legacy and Values

Kellie Sloane, the NSW Liberal leader, remarked that Baird was driven by a strong sense of service, conviction, and compassion, earning the trust and respect of people across political lines. "Above all, Bruce was a devoted husband to his late wife Judy, and a proud father and grandfather," she added.
