The US Department of Defence has officially stopped using Anthropic's AI tools, as confirmed by an official statement to the BBC. This decision follows the Pentagon's designation of the company as a supply chain risk to national security earlier this year.
Background
In February, Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth publicly criticized Dario Amodei, the CEO of Anthropic, and announced plans to phase out the company's products by late August. Despite this announcement, sources revealed that Anthropic's Claude model was still in use for various military operations, including intelligence gathering against Iran, as recently as last week.
Continued Use of Anthropic Tools
Multiple individuals familiar with the situation, including former US defence officials and contractors, indicated that Claude was considered a vital tool for processing large amounts of information. The Pentagon had integrated Claude into its Maven Smart System, a platform operated by Palantir for organizing intelligence data.
“"The fact that it took the Pentagon until now to remove all use of Claude from across the system is indicative that these things are not just plug and play," said Lauren Kahn, a senior research analyst at Georgetown's Center for Security and Emerging Technology.
