Bluesky CEO Toni Schneider announced long-term plans on Monday, revealing that the company has applied to create the .bsky internet domain suffix, similar to .com or .org. If approved, this would allow users to convert their longer social media handles into shorter, more streamlined domain names. For example, instead of using @sarahp.bsky.social, users could potentially use just sarahp.bsky.
Enhancing User Profiles
This development could enable Bluesky to innovate user profiles, transforming them from simple pages that display bios and posts into comprehensive personal home pages that better establish an individual’s online presence.
Application Status
As of now, Bluesky's application has not yet been approved. Schneider noted that the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the nonprofit responsible for overseeing internet domain names, will publish applications for new domains on October 7, 2026. The entire process for approval is expected to take between 18 to 24 months.
