The Conservative Party is set to announce plans for a £10 billion British air and missile defense system, dubbed the ‘Britannia Shield’, at their conference on Tuesday. This initiative is inspired by Israel’s Iron Dome and is described as one of the UK's most significant military programs since the Cold War.
Need for Enhanced Defense
James Cartlidge, the shadow defense secretary, will emphasize the necessity for Britain to prepare against potential aerial attacks. He argues that new investments in advanced radar and interceptor missiles are essential, stating that this program is "totally necessary because of the threats we face."
Traditionally, the UK military has not prioritized purchasing Iron Dome-style systems, citing other spending needs and the absence of drone and missile strikes similar to those faced by Israel or Ukraine. Military officials maintain that the UK's defense strategy focuses on deterring attacks or full-scale wars through nuclear capabilities, with NATO allies expected to assist in any direct threats to the British homeland.
Funding and Development Timeline
The Conservatives plan to fund the Britannia Shield through a defense uplift from their recent commitment to increase defense spending by over £10 billion annually, aiming for 3% of GDP by 2030. Cartlidge will outline a timeline for the project, aiming to deliver a minimum deployable capability within the first five years, with further enhancements and expanded missile stockpiles in the subsequent five years.
