The head of the Australian Federal Police (AFP) has condemned a "febrile" political environment following the alleged targeted attack on Independent MP Helen Haines. The incident, which involved Brendan Nugent, 43, allegedly driving a Toyota LandCruiser into Haines, has raised concerns about the increasing volume of abuse and intimidation faced by politicians.
Incident Overview
Haines, who has lost a leg, remains in a critical but stable condition at Melbourne’s Alfred Hospital, where doctors are working to save her other leg. Nugent appeared at the Wangaratta Magistrates Court on Wednesday morning, facing charges of dangerous driving causing serious injury, intentionally causing serious injury, and a federal offence of causing harm to a commonwealth public official. He did not request bail and will remain in custody until a committal mention on February 4.
Court Proceedings
In court, Nugent appeared downcast in a grey jumper and stared straight ahead. Magistrate Allison Vaughan noted his mental health and neurological concerns, requesting a mental health professional to see him immediately after the court appearance. Nugent's lawyer, Chirag Patel, stated that his client was not on any prescribed medication and was not withdrawing from any substances. He also mentioned that Nugent was suffering from concussion and idiopathic transverse myelitis, an inflammatory disorder of the spinal cord.
