Billionaire Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor of New York City, is set to spend $80 million to support Democratic candidates in the upcoming midterm elections. This significant financial boost comes as the Democratic Party faces challenges in fundraising while aiming to regain control of Congress.
Bloomberg's Focus on House Races
According to reports from US media on Tuesday, Bloomberg's contributions were made in September and October and are particularly aimed at Democrats seeking to flip the US House of Representatives, which is currently under Republican control by a narrow margin.
Howard Wolfson, Bloomberg’s political adviser, emphasized the importance of increasing the Democratic majority beyond the 218 seats needed for control, stating:
“"The difference between 221 and 230, in terms of the House majority, really matters."
Trump's Financial Commitment to Republicans
On the same day, Donald Trump announced his intention to allocate a total of $400 million to support Republican candidates, with $300 million already distributed. This financial commitment from Trump adds to the competitive landscape of the midterm elections.
