The BBC has announced the cancellation of its long-running consumer rights show You and Yours after more than 50 years on air, as part of a broader strategy to adapt to the growing popularity of podcasts. This decision is part of the corporation's plan to implement £500 million in cuts, affecting several other programs including Thinking Allowed, The Artificial Human, and Free Thinking.
Program Changes
The show, once hailed by former Radio 4 controller Mark Damazer as "one of the most important" on the station, will be replaced by two new weekly programs. These upcoming shows will focus on:
- The ideas shaping our lives and the wider world
- The impact of technology and AI
These changes are designed to facilitate the transition to podcast formats, reflecting the BBC's strategy to reshape its content for the podcast boom.
Expansion of Existing Programs
In addition to the cancellations, existing programs such as Start the Week and In Our Time will be extended to an hour to enhance coverage of ideas and technology, which are currently in high demand among podcast listeners.
