“"Freddie was more than a legendary voice. He was a kind, generous soul who loved his fans, his family, his friends and his music with everything he had. For decades he gave us the songs that became the soundtrack to our love stories, our celebrations and our most treasured memories. That gift will live on forever."
No cause of death has been disclosed.
A Musical Legacy
Jackson was renowned for his dextrous and technically brilliant voice, capable of transitioning from playful flirtation to earnest lamentation within a single album. He became a mainstay in the US R&B scene, achieving 10 No. 1 singles and four consecutive No. 1 albums on the R&B charts. His hits included the pop chart entries Rock Me Tonight (For Old Times Sake) and You Are My Lady, the latter earning him two Grammy nominations.
Born in 1956 and raised in Harlem, Jackson grew up in a single-parent household. He often reflected on his upbringing, saying:
“"Eating collard greens and fried chicken, that’s not learned soul, it’s not acquired in some singing school or from copying what you hear on records. I live soul."
