Veteran Indian actor Nana Patekar, known for his intense performances and distinct dialogue delivery, has died at the age of 75 in Goa. His son Malhar confirmed the news to BBC Marathi. Patekar suffered a cardiac arrest at his home and was rushed to the hospital after being found unconscious in the early hours of Thursday.
“"Despite 45 minutes of continuous CPR, he could not be revived," said Dr. Shekhar Salkar of Manipal Hospital in Goa.
Career Highlights
One of the most recognisable faces of Indian cinema, Patekar won three National Film Awards and became known for playing complex, often volatile characters. He made his film debut with Gaman in 1978 and gained prominence with his role in Parinda in 1989, where he portrayed the gritty gangster Anna. This performance earned him his first National Film Award and a Filmfare Award.
Throughout the 1990s, Patekar played many memorable characters, showcasing his depth and mastery over his craft. Notable roles include:
- Major Chauhan in Prahaar (which he also directed)
- Majid Khan in Angaar
- The patriotic firebrand in Tirangaa
- Pratap Narayan Tilak in Krantiveer, for which he won the national award for best actor.
