President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine has expressed feelings of betrayal towards Donald Trump following a throttling of access to the Starlink communications system. This situation has raised concerns about the potential deterioration of US-Ukraine relations after more than four years of conflict.

Impact of Starlink Throttling

The Ukrainian military reported that the Starlink system, produced by Elon Musk’s SpaceX but managed by the US government, is no longer functional on terminals moving at speeds greater than 100 mph. This change has rendered many of Ukraine's drones, which are crucial for operations behind enemy lines, inoperable. It has also affected the country's primary air defense system, which is vital for intercepting Russian attack drones targeting Kyiv.

Oleksandra Matviichuk, a Ukrainian human rights activist, warned,

“

"Without that protection, Russian drones will strike residential buildings, hospitals and schools like targets in a shooting gallery."

However, it is noted that Starlink is not essential for long-range missions targeting Russian oil refineries, which have been a concern for Trump due to their impact on global energy prices.

Legal Developments

In a separate legal matter, a US federal judge has temporarily blocked the Trump administration from imposing sanctions on two US-based human rights organizations that are assisting the International Criminal Court (ICC) in its investigations into war crimes in Gaza. A lawyer representing the organizations described the ruling as

“

"a victory for the First Amendment and an important step in unraveling the ICC sanctions regime."
