Rivian has introduced an AI assistant that allows drivers and passengers to interact with its electric vehicles through voice commands. During the TechCrunch Disrupt event this week, RJ Scaringe, the company's founder and CEO, revealed that future Rivian vehicles will support AI agents developed by other companies, such as Anthropic. The potential for integrating AI models like Claude, OpenAI’s Dots, or Meta’s Muse into Rivian's software is promising. Rivian has built its in-car software from scratch, avoiding reliance on platforms like Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, and has developed various applications, including navigation, while also incorporating popular apps like Apple Music.
In-House Agentic Framework
Rivian claims to have developed an in-house agentic framework that interprets user commands and directs them to the appropriate software component of the vehicle. Common tasks include adjusting temperature, activating seat warmers, or summarizing news updates. Scaringe explained:
