The chief adviser to Argentina’s president, Javier Milei, has sparked controversy by citing the election of Sagal Abdi-Wali to the UK parliament as evidence of the Islamisation of Britain. In a social media post, Santiago Caputo suggested that Argentina should assert sovereignty over the Falkland Islands to prevent what he described as the "interference of an Islamic state" in the region.

Context of the Statement

Caputo's remarks come amid rising tensions between Argentina and the UK regarding the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands, located 300 miles off the South American coast. Abdi-Wali, a member of the Labour Party, was elected as the MP for Holborn and St Pancras this month, defeating Green Party leader Zack Polanski. She officially took her seat in parliament on Monday.

Milei has indicated intentions to criminalise executives involved in the Falklands’ emerging oil industry and has threatened to target the fishing sector, which is vital to the islands' economy. Argentina has long claimed sovereignty over the islands, and UK officials note that the current level of Argentinian pressure has not been seen since the 1982 Falklands War.
