South Africa's deputy police chief, Lt Gen Shadrack Sibiya, has resigned just three weeks after being charged with serious sexual offences. His resignation was submitted by his lawyer during a disciplinary hearing on Monday, according to a police spokesperson.

Charges Against Sibiya

The charges against Sibiya include allegations of:

  • Sexually grooming a 16-year-old girl
  • Raping an 18-year-old woman
  • Trafficking

Sibiya has denied all allegations, claiming that while he did have sexual relations with the 18-year-old, it was consensual. He has been in custody since his arrest three weeks ago, following the denial of his bail application.
