The Brazilian Supreme Court is embroiled in a scandal that could potentially benefit Flávio Bolsonaro, the son of former president Jair Bolsonaro, as the country approaches a critical election runoff on October 25. The controversy centers around Alexandre de Moraes, a justice who played a key role in convicting Jair Bolsonaro, and has now found himself at the center of allegations that may aid the Bolsonaro family’s political resurgence.
Background of the Scandal
On September 7, during Brazil’s Independence Day celebrations, Flávio Bolsonaro addressed a crowd of far-right supporters, focusing his criticism not on his opponent, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, but on Moraes. He stated, "Whoever votes for Lula is voting for Alexandre de Moraes," linking the two despite Lula not appointing Moraes to the court. This connection has been a point of contention since Moraes oversaw the case that led to Jair Bolsonaro's 27-year prison sentence for attempting a coup.
Investigations and Allegations
The scandal erupted following a police investigation that revealed Moraes’s wife’s law firm had a £20 million contract with Daniel Vorcaro, a banker accused of orchestrating Brazil’s largest banking fraud. Text messages suggesting a close relationship between Moraes and Vorcaro have surfaced, although Moraes denies their authenticity. The investigation has implicated at least four other justices, indicating that half of the court’s ten justices are now entangled in the scandal.
