Demonstrations over poor public services and rising costs have escalated in Milan, leading the Italian government to announce the deployment of 500 army troops to the city. This decision comes after two days of unrest marked by clashes between demonstrators and police, looting, and vandalism.

Background of the Protests

The protests began over the weekend, with an initially peaceful demonstration on Saturday turning violent. Demonstrators, many of whom were hooded and believed to be minors, set bins ablaze and looted shops in the city center. Notable stores affected included sports retailers Decathlon and Arc’teryx, as well as mobile phone operator Vodafone.

Government Response

Matteo Salvini, Italy's deputy prime minister and head of the right-wing League party, announced the troop deployment on Monday via social media, stating, "From words to action: 500 more troops to defend Milan." This deployment is part of a broader package of security measures expected to be approved at a cabinet meeting on Tuesday.
