From maritime security to military hardware, India and Belgium have decided to enhance their cooperation, signing several pacts during a meeting between Belgian Defence Minister Theo Francken and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday. Minister Francken, who oversees both defence and foreign trade, is accompanying Belgian Prime Minister Bart de Wever on this mission.
Focus of the Mission
According to Belgian officials, the mission aims to address the growing interconnectedness of security in Europe and the Indo-Pacific, fostering closer military cooperation and identifying concrete opportunities for defence companies from both nations. At least 15 companies are part of the delegation.
Francken emphasized the geostrategic significance of this partnership:
“"India is a rapidly growing economy and a major military power in the Indo-Pacific. The country is also strategically located along some of the world’s most important trade routes. For an open trading nation like Belgium, the security of these sea lanes is vital."
He further noted that developments in Asia increasingly impact Europe, citing the ongoing war in Ukraine and China's assertiveness in the Indo-Pacific as critical factors.
Key Agreements Signed
The two nations signed a Letter of Intent, establishing a framework for structural cooperation between their armed forces. This agreement encompasses:
- Training and exchanges between officers
- Research and development
- Seminars and joint exercises
- Cooperation on maritime security
