India has finalized a deal to purchase the Javelin anti-tank guided missile system from the United States. On Friday, the Indian Army signed a Letter of Offer and Acceptance (LoA) to acquire the ordnance through the US Foreign Military Sales process. Washington welcomed the Army’s decision, stating that this milestone reflects the enduring partnership between the American and Indian militaries.
Strengthening Defense Ties
The deal, according to a statement from the US, opens the door for future collaboration between the defense industries of both nations. The US Embassy noted:
“"The landmark signature further strengthens the US-India Major Defense Partnership by demonstrating the depth of ongoing support to the Indian Army. It also opens discussions on mutually beneficial co-production and additional opportunities to strengthen the defense industrial bases of both countries."
US Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, remarked that:
“"This agreement reflects a defense partnership growing deeper, more capable, and more consequential. It demonstrates depth of US support and creates new opportunities for our defense industries to work together."
In May, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated that the US had committed to pursuing co-production of Javelin munitions with India, emphasizing the importance of improving the collective readiness of their forces.
Features of the Javelin System
The Javelin system is an advanced, man-portable, medium-range, fire-and-forget anti-tank guided missile designed for use against a wide array of targets, including armored vehicles and fortified positions. It is currently used by the US Army and US Marine Corps, along with several international customers.
