The British Army has been instructed to suspend non-essential training exercises for the majority of this year as part of cost-saving measures. This decision comes amid ongoing budget pressures affecting military operations.
Training Continuity for Key Units
Troops that are preparing for deployment, currently deployed, or on standby in a quick-reaction role will continue their training as usual. However, collective training exercises for UK-based units will be largely halted.
Cancelled Exercises
Reports from The Times and BBC indicate that the cancelled exercises include those involving tanks and Apache helicopters. The army has acknowledged these cuts, emphasizing that training will focus on lessons learned from the Ukraine conflict, particularly in areas such as drone warfare and modernization.
An army spokesperson stated:
“"Our training continues and we are prioritising activity that contributes most directly to readiness, deployability and operational effectiveness. We are also investing £2bn to transform training for the British army over the next 15 years."
