Thousands gathered at Wentworth Park in central Sydney on Friday night for the final greyhound race meeting before the historic track is demolished and returned to parkland. This marked the end of an era for a venue that has hosted greyhound races since 1932.
Final Race Highlights
The last race of the night was the Million Dollar Chase, the richest greyhound race in the world, which was won by Magical Ang. The atmosphere was bittersweet as fans reflected on the significance of the venue.
Emotional Farewells
Geoff Rose, chair of the NSW Greyhound Breeders, Owners and Trainers Association, expressed sadness over the closure, stating, "It is quite heartbreaking to a lot of people."
Jeff Collerson, an 81-year-old veteran greyhound writer, shared his memories of the track, recalling his first visit in 1962. He lamented, "Wentworth Park’s got a special aura about it that the other tracks won’t have … it’s got a special buzz to it. That will be lost forever."
