Taiwanese prosecutors have charged five men in connection with a plot to ram a car into comedian Huang Yi-hao, who has made jokes about the Chinese Communist Party and Xi Jinping. This incident highlights ongoing tensions between Taiwan and China, as Taiwan accuses China of transnational repression aimed at silencing critics on the self-governed island.

The Incident

According to prosecutors in New Taipei, an individual from mainland China, identified only as 'K', allegedly paid the five defendants to injure Huang severely enough to require hospitalization. Prosecutors stated:

“

"This case involves a serious incident in which the Chinese Communist Party is suspected of using cross-border suppression tactics to direct lawless elements in our country to suppress dissenting political voices through extreme violence."

In a performance, Huang had previously insulted Xi's appearance, comparing him to Winnie-the-Pooh and criticizing his political record.

Details of the Attack

Reports indicate that a GPS tracker was placed on Huang's scooter months before the attack to monitor his daily routines. On September 11, two of the defendants drove into Huang's bike as he was riding home but stopped after hearing him scream. Prosecutors noted that Huang suffered a bruised pelvis from the incident.
