A Florida state appeals court has reversed the felony murder conviction of Rhonda Jewell, a woman who accidentally left her baby in a hot car, leading to the child's tragic death.
Incident Overview
In July 2023, while babysitting four children from two different families, 46-year-old Rhonda Jewell forgot that 10-month-old Ariya Paige was in the back seat of her car. She went inside to care for the other children, leaving Ariya strapped in her car seat in the sweltering Florida heat. Tragically, Ariya died of hyperthermia before Jewell realized her mistake.
Jewell was convicted in 2024 of third-degree felony murder, based on the underlying felony of leaving a child unattended in a vehicle, and was sentenced to 17 years in prison.
Court's Ruling
On Wednesday, Florida’s first district court of appeal overturned Jewell’s convictions for both third-degree felony murder and leaving a child unattended in a vehicle. The court found that both charges required proof that Jewell had knowingly left Ariya in the car.
The ruling highlighted concerns about the expansion of the felony murder doctrine, which holds individuals criminally responsible for deaths resulting from felonies, even if they did not intend to kill. This doctrine has led to controversial outcomes in various cases across the country.
