Design platform Figma unveiled a new Markdown-based editor during its first Config event in India. This editor aims to help define a company’s design, integrate design and code libraries, and work with the Payload headless content management system. The new features are designed to enhance how both Figma's and third-party agents adhere to a brand’s design rules while utilizing AI.

New Features Introduced

Figma Specs

One of the standout features is Figma Specs, a Markdown editor that allows users to define their design language simply. This document can serve as a reference for teams and agents during the design process in Figma. Key functionalities include:

  • Standalone File: Specs can exist independently in Figma.
  • Canvas Integration: They can also co-exist within the canvas.
  • Referencing Elements: Users can reference other Figma elements, embed FigJam diagrams, code layers, and designs.

Context Management

Teams can incorporate additional context about design, including:

  • Design libraries
  • Code libraries
  • Guidelines for managing the design system

Agents can utilize this centralized system to follow established rules effectively.

Recent Developments

In the past week, Figma expanded access to its agent on canvas to a broader user base. To address the unpredictable nature of AI, the company is providing tools to guide it towards more reliable outcomes. Additionally, Figma introduced its code layers feature, which allows coding within designs on the canvas for creating more interactive prototypes. This feature, initially announced in private beta in June, is now available in public beta for wider testing.
