Nvidia, the world’s most valuable chipmaker valued at $5.5 trillion (£4.1 trillion), has announced a $250 million donation to the UK aimed at supporting AI safety research. This pledge, which spans five years, comes amid growing concerns regarding the safety of AI agents, particularly following incidents involving autonomous programs.

Context

The donation coincides with the UK government’s confirmation of its AI Security Institute (AISI), which is tasked with testing advanced AI models. This institute will have the capability to evaluate cutting-edge technologies developed by major companies, including OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google, prior to their public release.

Developments

Nvidia stated that the funds would primarily support the broader UK AI safety and security research community. A portion of the donation will also benefit the British Open-Ended Learning and Discovery Lab and the Science of Fundamental AI Research Lab, which are collaborative efforts involving Edinburgh, Cambridge, Oxford, and University College London, as well as Imperial College London.
