John Healey is set to impose a tax on Britain’s banks in his upcoming budget on 28 October. This decision aims to help mitigate the financial impact caused by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Currently, Healey is in Bangkok, where the International Monetary Fund has commended the UK’s efforts towards fiscal balance, advising him to "stay the course."

To adhere to the Treasury’s deficit reduction strategy amidst increasing government borrowing costs, Healey is considering extracting additional revenue from the financial sector. One potential measure under discussion is reversing the cuts to the bank surcharge implemented by Jeremy Hunt, which could generate over £2 billion annually.
