The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) has issued a warning about potential risks to the country's financial stability, highlighting concerns over a possible collapse of the global artificial intelligence (AI) investment boom. In its latest financial stability review, the central bank assessed the current state of the financial system and noted that while Australian households are generally well-positioned to handle rising interest rates and falling property prices, they are not immune to global economic shifts.
Key Findings from the RBA Report
- The RBA estimates that fewer than 1% of borrowers are in a position of negative equity, meaning they owe more on their homes than their current market value.
- Despite broadening price falls in the housing market, the share of mortgagors experiencing severe financial stress remains low, supported by a strong labor market and savings buffers.
- Recent buyers, particularly those who utilized the government’s 5% home guarantee scheme, are more likely to face negative equity due to high loan amounts relative to property values.
