Artificial intelligence (AI) could trigger financial market shocks, and the UK needs to be prepared for them, warned Andrew Bailey, the governor of the Bank of England. He stated that the central bank is monitoring the significant investments in AI "very carefully" and cautioned that "not everybody always wins."
Investment Trends in AI
The money spent on and loaned to AI firms over the past few years, in hopes of substantial returns, has led to some companies being valued as multi-trillion dollar businesses. When asked if he believed an AI bubble could burst, Bailey responded, "You could see some correction of asset prices at some point."
Bailey spoke exclusively to the BBC about the risks and benefits of AI for the UK economy. He acknowledged the technology's potential to strengthen economic growth, stating, "But it also brings with it substantial risks, and so we have to be on top of both of those."
Risks Associated with AI
One major risk is the possibility that the significant investments in AI may not yield the expected returns. Nvidia, currently the world's most valuable listed company, has a market valuation of $5.5 trillion (£4.14 trillion), largely due to investor confidence in AI's profit potential. Meanwhile, tech giants like Alphabet, Meta, Microsoft, and Amazon are investing hundreds of billions of dollars into AI technology.
