Amazon is focusing on ambient computing as the future of personal AI, moving away from traditional app-based interactions. During the TechCrunch Disrupt event on Thursday, Panos Panay, Amazon’s SVP of Devices, Alexa & Leo, discussed the evolution of personal computing and the introduction of new AI wearables from Bee.
The Shift to Ambient Devices
"A lot of times, what you’re doing right now — what we all do right now — is we have to remember what we’re asking our tool to do for us," Panay explained, highlighting the current engagement with smartphones. He emphasized a future where devices operate in the background, using sensors and AI to assist users without direct commands.
“"As it works in the background, you’re able to stay more present. You’re able to get more done. You’re about to spend more time with people … you’re not afraid if you miss something. It’s incredibly powerful," Panay said.
Introduction of Bee Devices
Amazon's latest venture into this realm is marked by the launch of new Bee devices, which include a wristband that can also be worn as a pendant, and a credit-card-sized gadget that magnetically attaches to smartphones. These devices are designed to passively record audio and take notes throughout the day, helping users manage tasks and reminders.
