Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has pledged to respond to ongoing Russian attacks on Ukraine's power grid, as European leaders express solidarity with Kyiv amid a dispute involving Donald Trump. Speaking at a gathering of European security officials in Warsaw on Monday, Zelenskyy stated, "If Russia does not agree to an energy ceasefire this winter, we will respond."
Context of the Conflict
The tensions escalated after Trump announced an "energy ceasefire" between Kyiv and Moscow, a proposal that Zelenskyy claimed neither side had consented to. He expressed surprise at the announcement, which coincided with Russian drone attacks on Kyiv. Shortly after, Russia executed a targeted strike on a power station in Kharkiv, resulting in widespread blackouts across the capital.
Zelenskyy remarked, "It’s clear that Putin does not read Truth Social," referring to Trump's social media platform. Ukraine is seeking to negotiate a ceasefire to alleviate pressure on its electricity grid as winter approaches, but Russia has shown no willingness to cease its assaults on Ukrainian infrastructure.
European Support for Ukraine
European leaders have rallied behind Ukraine, attributing the ongoing strikes on energy infrastructure to Russia. Kaja Kallas, the EU foreign policy chief, stated, "We welcome the energy ceasefire when it holds," but noted that there has been no indication that Russia would adhere to such an agreement.
