We are restarting our live coverage of the latest developments in Europe following Donald Trump’s announcement of what he termed an energy ceasefire in the Russia-Ukraine war.

Ukrainian Response to Russian Strikes

On Sunday evening, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that Russian strikes targeted Ukrainian energy facilities, despite Trump’s claim that both sides had agreed to cease attacks on each other’s energy infrastructure. In a post on X, Zelenskyy stated that a drone had struck a power plant in Kyiv, resulting in power outages in the capital. He further noted that there was a strike on a power plant in the north-eastern city of Kharkiv, adding:

“

“Ukrainian skies have been infested with Russian ‘shaheds’ all day.”
(Referring to a type of Iranian-made drone commonly used in the conflict.)

Casualties from Russian Attacks

Russian attacks on Sunday resulted in the deaths of six individuals across two Ukrainian cities. This included a strike on a grocery store in Kharkiv, where three people lost their lives and 20 others were injured, including two children, according to regional officials. In western Ukraine, another Russian strike claimed the lives of three people.

Trump's Announcement

Earlier on Sunday, Trump declared that “effective immediately, there is an ENERGY CEASEFIRE in the War between Russia and Ukraine.” He urged both parties not to break the ceasefire on his Truth Social platform, although he provided no further details. Zelenskyy expressed surprise at this announcement, stating it was “news to me,” while Russia has yet to confirm any agreement.
