Volvo is enhancing its automated driving capabilities through an expanded partnership with Nvidia. Announced on Thursday, this collaboration will integrate three Nvidia hardware and software components into future Volvo vehicles, enabling an automated driving system capable of navigating both urban streets and highways.
Partnership Details
Under this expanded partnership, Volvo will merge its vehicle safety systems and engineering expertise with Nvidia’s Hyperion sensor and compute architecture, the Alpamayo driving software stack, and the Halos safety evaluation layer. According to Ali Kani, head of Nvidia’s automotive division, the Alpamayo stack is designed to be redundant and diverse. It combines a family of AI models, datasets, and simulation tools with classical software that employs machine learning alongside camera and radar perception.
“"The point is we run these two stacks at the same time, and we have multimodal sensors in our philosophy because it’s a safer product that way," Kani stated, noting that the open-source Alpamayo software has been downloaded by over 650,000 developers.
