Two giant pandas set off to Atlanta zoo from China after Xi-Trump summit

Two giant pandas have departed Chengdu in south-western China for their new homes in Atlanta, Georgia, as part of an agreement between the Chinese and US governments. The pandas left early on Sunday, following an announcement made by Chinese President Xi Jinping during a three-day summit with Donald Trump in Washington DC.

The loan of the pandas to the Atlanta Zoo is one of the few concrete outcomes from Xi's state visit, which was marked by expressions of goodwill between the leaders but did not resolve any of the longstanding differences between the two countries. Atlanta had last hosted pandas in 2024, leaving the zoo without these beloved bears.
