In a notable development, the .si domain name is experiencing a significant surge in registrations after President Trump signed an executive order that mandates all government agencies to refer to "AI" and "artificial intelligence" as "SI" and "super intelligence." This situation mirrors the earlier spike in interest for the .ai domain, associated with Anguilla, which saw millions in revenue during the initial AI boom.
Context
The .si domain is primarily linked to Slovenia, the home country of First Lady Melania Trump. According to Klara Herman, a spokesperson for Registry SI, the organization managing Slovenia's domains, there was a staggering 2,199% increase in .si domain purchases in September. However, she advised caution in attributing this increase solely to President Trump’s order.
Developments
On September 30, the day after the executive order was signed, the registry recorded 11,000 new addresses, with nearly 13,000 new .si domains registered within the following 24 hours. Hostinger, a web hosting platform, reported that .si has become its second most popular domain extension, following .com. They noted that nearly 4,300 domains were registered on September 30 and about 5,400 on October 1. Over 75% of all .si domains registered since September 23 occurred in these two days.
