When Andrew Bedford discovered an old wedding album dumped outside his cafe, Eva’s Kitchen, in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, he initially considered throwing it away. However, upon opening the album, he found vintage photographs of a happy couple on their wedding day in 1957, which he felt were too precious to discard.

The Discovery

Unable to identify the bride and groom due to faded handwritten names, Bedford took the album back to his cafe for safekeeping. His partner, Éva Lemperger, made an appeal on social media to help identify the couple.

The Investigation

The mystery was eventually solved when a local family historian, Anne-Marie Fawcett, took up the case. She tracked down the couple’s 65-year-old son, Michael Dawson, who revealed that the album had been stolen from a storage unit along with other family heirlooms after his parents passed away. The album contains some of his only surviving photographs of his mother, Barbara Parr, and father, Maxwell Dawson. Dawson expressed his intention to "protect it with [his] life."

"I was just so happy he got it back. I thought, if it had been mine, and I’d lost pictures of my family – and they were only pictures I had of them – I’d have been elated if somebody had found them and given them back to me," said Bedford.
