The world is facing a looming copper shortage, with projections indicating that by 2040, supplies could fall 25% short of demand due to the AI data center boom and economy-wide electrification. This presents a significant challenge for the mining industry, which typically increases production by opening new mines—a process that is both costly and uncertain, with only 0.3% of prospective mines proving viable.
Innovative Solutions in Mining
A new wave of critical minerals startups is emerging, focusing on biotechnology to enhance copper extraction from existing mines. These companies are primarily working with heap leaches, where microbes assist in separating minerals from waste. Notable players in this space include Endolith, which has developed “Olympic caliber” microbes, Ceibo, which is creating its own strains, and Transition Metal Solutions, which has introduced prebiotics to enhance microbial activity.
Giraffe Bio is taking a different approach by developing mineral-specific chemicals that can help mines recover up to 5% more copper. According to Alejandro Buffo Sempé, co-founder and CEO of Giraffe Bio, this increase is significant in the mining sector, where most companies would be satisfied with an additional 1% to 2%.
