The BBC has defended its decision to edit out a transgender rights slogan from a T-shirt worn by contestant Bethany Antonia on Strictly Come Dancing. The editing was done to adhere to the network's standard practice of avoiding "overt branding or slogans" during broadcasts.

Background

During rehearsals for her live performance on Saturday night, Antonia was filmed wearing a T-shirt that featured the slogan "Protect the Dolls." This slogan has become a symbol of support for the rights of trans women, with proceeds from the T-shirt sales benefiting the UK trans charity, Not A Phase. However, when the footage aired on Saturday, the slogan was edited out, leaving the T-shirt appearing plain white.

The edited footage is also available on the BBC’s iPlayer platform. The T-shirt, designed by Conner Ives, has been worn by notable figures including actors Pedro Pascal and Tilda Swinton, as well as singer Troye Sivan.
