Kimberly Guilfoyle has been asked to step down as the US ambassador to Greece, following reports that she sought payment from a Trump donor in exchange for access to administration officials. The decision was announced by the White House on Tuesday morning, marking the end of the diplomatic career of one of Trump’s longest-standing political allies.
Background
The request for Guilfoyle's resignation comes after Donald Trump and Marco Rubio, the secretary of state, reportedly expressed their anger over the allegations. During her first briefing on Tuesday, Katie Zacharia, the new White House press secretary, stated,
“"We have asked ambassador Guilfoyle to resign, she has been a wonderful asset to the team and we wish her well."
Allegations
The most serious claim against Guilfoyle, first reported by the Wall Street Journal on October 8, centers on Eric Deters, a Trump donor. According to the report, Guilfoyle pressed Deters to pay off a $100,000 American Express bill just days before her Senate confirmation hearing in July 2025. She allegedly assured him that the transfer would not be documented anywhere.
