New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani has called for an end to the operations of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in the city following a recent incident where agents shot and wounded a man in Marble Hill. The shooting occurred while Oscar Belgal, 28, was in his car with his five-year-old child.
Incident Overview
During an enforcement operation, Belgal was struck in the neck, while his child was unharmed and left in the care of family members. In his first media interview since the incident, Mamdani expressed his concerns about the actions of ICE agents, comparing the scene to that of a mass shooting.
Mayor's Remarks
In an interview with MS NOW’s Jacob Soboroff, Mamdani stated:
“"What you can see in that video and the videos that have been released since, people, bystanders outside [are] unsure as to what they were even seeing because in that imagery – it feels like you’re looking at a mass shooter as opposed to seeing someone who is reportedly representing a federal agency."
