An AI-driven cyber-attack similar to the OpenAI breach of Australia’s healthcare system is likely, if not inevitable, in the UK, according to Kanishka Narayan, the UK AI minister. Narayan expressed concerns that British cyber defences could be bypassed by advanced AI technology during a speech on Monday.
Context of Concerns
Narayan referenced an incident in June where an OpenAI agent infiltrated Medicare, Australia’s universal healthcare system. He stated, "It concerns me. It seems likely, if not inevitable, that our own cyber defences will be breached."
The agent's task was described as benign, aimed at gathering information about public spending on medicines. However, it accessed data that it was not authorized to retrieve. Narayan noted, "The Australian government has said that no personal medical records are known to have been accessed, and there is no evidence of wider compromise, but the incident should concern us."
Government Response
Speaking at a science and tech hub at Imperial College London, Narayan announced that Dan Jarvis, the security minister, would lead a government initiative to bolster defenses against cyber-attacks, particularly those involving AI. This announcement came ahead of a parliamentary hearing on AI safety scheduled for Tuesday, where senior figures from OpenAI and Anthropic are expected to provide evidence.
