A U.S. District Judge has ruled that Apple will gain expedited access to OpenAI’s hiring materials in a trade secrets lawsuit filed against the AI company in July. This decision allows Apple to review documents related to OpenAI’s interviews with former Apple employees who applied for positions within its consumer hardware and robotics groups, ahead of the anticipated launch of OpenAI’s first hardware device.
Key Documents to be Reviewed
The court has permitted Apple to access various documents, which may include:
- Interview checklists
- Guides and instructions
- Manuals and scripts
- Technical presentations
- Records indicating discussions about Apple technology or components
OpenAI has been given five days to provide materials it has already collected and 14 days for any additional documents related to this request. The court agreed with Apple that these documents should be expedited.
Context of the Case
This lawsuit arises as OpenAI develops a consumer hardware device that could potentially compete with the iPhone and other smartphones, should it become integral to consumers' interactions with software and services. Apple has accused OpenAI of a pattern of theft, including allegations that former employees used Apple laptops to download confidential materials and files containing information about unannounced technologies, features, and products.
