OpenAI has reported to the FBI after discovering that an employee allegedly planted a hidden recording device in one of its executive conference rooms. The employee, identified by federal prosecutors as Abdulrahman Alfozan, a Saudi national, was fired and arrested on October 9, approximately a week after the surveillance device was found.
Details of the Incident
OpenAI stated that it utilized its internal AI models to analyze the "sophisticated" device. According to the company, the device featured advanced encryption, audio monitoring capabilities, and a mechanism for transferring data designed to evade detection. However, it remains unclear how this device differs technically from other recording devices.
Nate Evans, a spokesperson for OpenAI, confirmed that Alfozan joined the company in July 2025 and was part of the product team. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of California has charged him with using an electronic device to intercept oral communications, effectively accusing him of covertly recording conversations without consent.
