Canada-born singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell, 82, has officially become a US citizen after first moving to the country in the mid-1960s. She shared footage of her citizenship ceremony on her Instagram account, alongside a photo of herself next to an American flag, captioned:

“

“A journey that began 62 years ago.”

This milestone allows Mitchell to vote in US elections, a right she previously lamented not having. At a concert in 2024, she expressed her frustration, stating:

“

“Fuck Donald Trump, I love that song,” referencing the rap track by YG. “I wish I could vote ... I’m a Canadian. I’m one of those lousy immigrants.”

Early Life and Career

Born in Fort Macleod, Alberta in 1943, Mitchell later moved with her family to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Her musical journey began in local folk clubs, eventually leading her to Calgary and Toronto, where she met US folk singer Chuck Mitchell. They married in 1965, and shortly after, she moved to the US. Although the marriage ended two years later, Mitchell had already begun to make a name for herself in the vibrant US folk music scene.
