How did AI discover the internet's massive cyber-security risk? Microsoft boss Satya Nadella stated he has not seen anything like the PHP emergency "in a long, long time". At a recent conference, he referenced the ongoing global efforts to fix the critical cyber-security flaw affecting millions of websites, noting, "it was a long day and a long night, I know, for all the IT and security folks."

Other IT and cyber experts shared their struggles over the last 48 hours, providing insight into the challenges faced during this major cyber emergency. Adam Mudd, a UK-based system administrator, remarked, "It's been relentless." He noted that he had never received so many messages from concerned clients about their websites.

“

"The biggest challenge has been juggling clients who want their sites taken offline as a precaution, while trying to coordinate updates and fixes across countless different setups," Mudd explained. "Sometimes it takes me longer to take a website down than to fix the PHP problem."

PHP is a widely used programming language that powers millions of websites. However, two critical flaws were discovered, prompting national cyber-security authorities to urge IT teams to either download a security fix urgently or take their websites and servers offline. Mudd reported being under immense pressure, often working late into the night to secure his customers' systems.

In Mauritius, IT administrator Loganaden Velvindron echoed similar sentiments, stating his team has been overwhelmed since realizing how much software relies on PHP.

“

"Many versions of PHP running are completely end-of-life, so we are having to rebuild web apps and change code in some cases," Velvindron said. He added that the announcement of the security vulnerabilities came as a surprise, leaving little time for preparation.
