Spotify has confirmed its crackdown on Family Plan sharing during its third-quarter call with investors, describing the new method as a "routine improvement" to its existing verification tools.

New Verification Method

Recent reports indicated that Spotify is rolling out a "QR code verification" method. Under this system, members on the Family Plan will be prompted to verify their residence with the plan manager by scanning a QR code. This code appears on the plan manager’s phone, which the member must scan with their own device.

Members have seven days to complete the QR code verification after receiving a notification. If they miss this window, they will not be able to join another Family or Duo plan for 12 months and will have to switch to an individual plan that they must pay for themselves.
