A hydropower plant that supplies electricity to India was among the power plants affected by Wednesday’s flash flood in Nepal. Authorities are currently assessing the extent of damage to numerous power plants that cater to the bulk of Nepal’s electricity needs.
Power Supply Reduced
A senior Indian government official informed The Indian Express on Thursday that Nepal has reduced its power supply to India by half, from approximately 800 megawatts (MW) to at least 400 MW. The 14-MW Devighat hydropower plant, which supplies power to India, was notably impacted by the floods.
India imports electricity from various hydroelectric power plants in Nepal. According to data from Grid India, India imported 963.4 MW from Nepal at the peak on August 26, coinciding with the onset of the flash flood.
Other Affected Plants
In addition to the Devighat plant, two other hydroelectric plants, Chilime and Trisuli, which supply electricity to Bangladesh, have also been affected. Nepal’s Energy Ministry stated that around 13 hydroelectric power plants and a solar plant were impacted due to the floods.
